Witches head Memorial sculptures Postcard prints

These multi media sculptures were made as part of the Creative Covens events to honour and remember all those who's lives were taken during the horrific Scottish witch trials.

These pieces are my creative response to the horror created by The Scottish Witchcraft Act and I hope they serve as an act of rememberance but also as a representation of the breadth of the reach within communities that The Act had. NO one was safe!

The process of creating my witches memorial heads starts with clearing my mind and trying not to impose any preconceived ideas of what they should look like onto the pieces. The bases are prepared using foam, wire, and calico strips, then I sit with the clay; listening for a whisper, a connection and then I start to sculpt. Allowing the clay to build and wrinkle until the face of the accused starts to form. As I work, I get snippets of a story, a name, a place, a tragedy. Some of this can be very vivid and harrowing, real tears have been shed into these memorial pieces. Appropriately so, as their losses were never mourned or recognised in their own lifetimes. The clay bones of their features are then covered in a printed linen ‘skin’, scarred with the marks of the trauma they have experienced, etched with the word WITCH. They are finished by dusting with pigments and adding natural wool roving for their hair.

Each has a story to tell and these are printed to the reverse of each print for you to read an remember.

These postcards are perfect to place on an ancestral altar, to honour those who went before us and to remember our kin folk who now wander the other realms.

Set of six A5 postcard prints double sided with a soft touch silk finish.
